Stucco work restoration in Sormani Library, Milano

The hall of the Sormani Library, the largest in Milano, is decorated with stucco work dated late eighteenth century, depicting floral and mythological animals,  a good quality made with a plaster of lime and gypsum in pure neoclassical style.

Because of infiltration, which lasted for a long period, some of the figures had completely destriyed and some elements fallen. Therefore, it was necessary to make a long work of absorption and removal of soluble salts, which were by now penetrated deeply, using absorbent clays applied several times.

Then began the reconstruction of the figures, partly making resin casts and reproducing the plaster decorations, part working on freehand with the use of natural lime mortars. It is not easy to emulate the skill of the ancient decorators, who spent theirt whole life working on the same themes, but with the help of decorators REA finally has come to an optimal result.

Like in many other other interventions, the restoration of Sormani was one of those ones where new technologies and traditional materials is combined with a high degree of manual skills.
